CCMG Fellowships
The Department of Medical Genetics is accredited by the Canadian College of Medical Genetics as a Comprehensive Centre for Clinical Genetics Service and Training in the areas of Clinical Genetics, Cytogenetics, Biochemical Genetics, and Molecular Genetics.

Clinical Genetics

This fellowship is a full-time training position in Clinical Genetics leading to certification by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists and ultimately to a career practicing as a clinical/medical geneticist.

The fellowship is open to individuals with an MD having completed a minimum of three years in another specialty (non-genetics) Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accredited residency program and/or the Collège des Médecins du Québec (CMQ), or equivalent training required for provincial licensure.  Research experience would be an asset.  Applicants must be Canadian citizens or individuals with Permanent Resident Status in Canada.

This is a three-year accredited training program consisting of educational sessions and supervised clinical genetics service in all aspects of medical genetics including pediatric and adult genetics, prenatal diagnosis, and cancer genetics.  Trainees will also spend rotations in a Metabolic clinic and each of the cytogenetics, biochemical genetics and molecular genetics laboratories.  There is 6 months for research.  This satisfies the eligibility requirements to sit the CCMG examinations in Cytogenetics.  (see CCMG web site for training guidelines  http://www.ccmg-ccgm.org/ )

The training will be based at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in the R.B. Lowry Clincal Genetics Unit.
