This system is part of Alberta Health and Wellness' surveillance system. Its aim is to provide high quality incidence data on the frequency of congenital anomalies in live born, stillborn, and terminated pregnancies less than 20 weeks gestation. One purpose is to detect unusual changes in the baseline frequencies and includes investigation of suspected clusters or increases. There are multiple sources of ascertainment. An annual report is produced. ACASS is a member of the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems and participates in collaborative research both there and with Health Canada and the Canadian Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System.
